Search stopped being a list of ten blue links. A growing share of your customers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google’s AI Overviews a question and act on the answer, without ever visiting a results page. If your brand is not part of that answer, you are invisible to them.
Two disciplines address this. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the work of becoming a source that AI models draw on. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the work of structuring content so it can be lifted directly into a featured snippet, a People Also Ask box, or a voice response.
Why traditional SEO is not enough
Classic SEO optimises for ranking. An AI answer engine does not rank you, it either cites you or it does not. That shifts what matters. Keyword density and backlink counts still help you get crawled, but the deciding factors become clarity, specificity, and whether your page states a fact cleanly enough to be quoted.
What actually moves the needle
- Answer the question in the first two sentences. Models extract the passage that resolves the query fastest. Long preambles get skipped.
- Write in extractable units. Short paragraphs, headings phrased as real questions, and lists that can be quoted whole.
- Be concrete. Numbers, dates, named methods and specific outcomes get cited. Vague marketing language does not.
- Publish original data. A model has no reason to cite a page that restates what a hundred others already said. It has every reason to cite the only source of a statistic.
- Keep structured data accurate. Schema markup helps machines understand what your page is and who wrote it.
How to tell whether it is working
Rank tracking will not show this. Ask the assistants the questions your customers ask and record whether you appear, in what context, and alongside which competitors. Watch for referral traffic from AI platforms in your analytics, and for a rise in branded search, which is what usually happens when people encounter you in an answer and look you up afterwards.
The brands winning here are not the ones publishing the most. They are the ones publishing the clearest, most specific, most quotable version of the thing their customers need to know.
